Local Artist of the Week: Richard Ruehle-Walnut Burl Platter

A burl is typically a growth on a tree truck that is filled with small knots from dormant buds.  Burls yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood, prized for its beauty and rarity, but burl wood is very hard to work with because the grain is twisted and interlocked, but those characteristics also yield an extremely dense and hard wood which is resistant to splitting and highly sought after for making bowls and platters.

This darkly handsome shallow burl wood platter is almost 12 inches in diameter.  It is signed and numbered by the artist and is accompanied by a Certificate of Provenance attesting to your ownership of an original work of art.
